Boyd Chan

My name is Boyd and I’m a Service Management Specialist with a knack for operational data gathering, transformation, analysis and reporting. In 2012, I obtained my Masters of Science in Information Technology through the University of New South Wales @ The Australia Defence Force Academy (UNSW@ADFA). I was also part of an online community known as the Panasonic Insider Crew in the capacity of “Insider Guru” for Panasonic Australia where I interacted with other tech enthusiasts and find out more about Panasonic's latest gadgets. I love technology, gadgets, and the Internet and maintain a keen interest in these areas locally, nationally, and globally. I hope by sharing my views on these topics that people will receive an honest point of view from someone with a genuine interest in these topics. I have also written and edited articles for Neowin - you can check out my articles over @ https://www.neowin.net/news/poster/boyd_chan I hope you enjoy reading my blog!

KeepVid Video Link Submission

I’m sure we have all come across a YouTube video or two that, for one reason or another, became an instant favourite or stirred up some sort of nostalgia for the old days. Whilst broadband speeds have been increasing and video sharing has become more popular, sometimes it isn’t so possible to get to YouTube …

Get a More Robust Notepad with Notepad++

Just a quick one tonight. For a long time, I used the built-in notepad application in Windows to jot notes and other temporary information as it was quick to load and didn’t burden you with formatting overheads. However, one significant drawback is that as the size of a text file increases, the slower Notepad becomes. …

Shorten URLs with Bit.ly

Just a brief one tonight. Sometimes you might like to share a link with someone but have been turned off by the length of some URLs. Sites that utilise content management systems are notorious for incredibly long URLs which can also break if you attempt to send one in an e-mail or perhaps via instant …

Using a 128GB solid …

Firefox 4.0 has been a long time and for those who might not have been following its development could probably be forgiven for thinking that things have gone into a bit of a holding pattern recently. Thankfully, a beta release has emerged from Mozilla and I’ve taken a quick look at it. What you will …

With the Prime Minister of the day expected to call an election tomorrow for late August, I thought it was important to remind everyone to check their voting enrolment. Every vote counts and ensuring that you are correctly enrolled is especially vital this election. To check your electoral enrolment, go to the Australian Electoral Commission …

Check Your Firewall Security with Shields Up

Just a quick one tonight. You can never be too careful with security and your connection to the Internet. One way the bad guys can try and get into your computers or your router is when you have open ports exposed to the outside world. For those that don’t know, a computer has two sets …

News.Com.Au – Get Your Facts Straight on iPad Security

Today, I saw an article on news.com.au entitled “Business not ready to embrace ‘open’ iPad”. In a nuthsell, the article attempted to relate the comments from an Ovum analyst (specifically around the use of the iPad including the freedom to install applications) with an event in the US that saw details of 114,000 customers exposed by …

No Static IP? Use DynDNS!

Some of us aren’t blessed (or perhaps cursed depending how you look at it) with a static IP address. For me, it’s a blessing that I do have one because I can run a whole bunch of servers (for VoIP, web servers, TF2 and VPN for instance) without having to keep updating an IP address. …
