Boyd Chan

My name is Boyd and I’m a Service Management Specialist with a knack for operational data gathering, transformation, analysis and reporting. In 2012, I obtained my Masters of Science in Information Technology through the University of New South Wales @ The Australia Defence Force Academy (UNSW@ADFA). I was also part of an online community known as the Panasonic Insider Crew in the capacity of “Insider Guru” for Panasonic Australia where I interacted with other tech enthusiasts and find out more about Panasonic's latest gadgets. I love technology, gadgets, and the Internet and maintain a keen interest in these areas locally, nationally, and globally. I hope by sharing my views on these topics that people will receive an honest point of view from someone with a genuine interest in these topics. I have also written and edited articles for Neowin - you can check out my articles over @ https://www.neowin.net/news/poster/boyd_chan I hope you enjoy reading my blog!

Office 2013 – First Impressions

Last night I decided to try out Office 2013 – perhaps not the smartest thing to do just as the university semester is getting underway but I couldn’t help myself. Anyway, I just wanted to share my first impressions of it with you starting with the installation. First of all, the time between kicking off …

Incoming Gadget – 2012 Toyota Prius

This is by far the largest and most expensive gadget (if you can call it a gadget) I’ve been able to get my hands on and I’m quite excited to be sharing my experience with it on the blog with everyone. For those that don’t know, I already drive a 2008 Toyota Prius i-Tech but …

Shrink the Size of a Bloated Spreadsheet

Here’s something to try if you have a spreadsheet that seems to occupy far too much disk space given the content it contains. One sheet at a time, try moving a sheet to a blank workbook and then moving it back to the original workbook until you have done it for all workbooks. I can …

Recent Drop in Samsung Galaxy S III Battery Life

I just wanted to share an observation regarding my Samsung Galaxy S III. Normally, I don’t leave my phone on the charger overnight (and maybe I should start doing so) but recently I have noticed that battery life has taken a significant hit to the point that I am left with little or no battery …

Despite the lengths some of us go to organise our files and folders there can be times when we do end up with folders containing a huge amount of files. Sometimes these files will be all the same file type (like documents and spreadsheets) or they may be a mix of anything and everything. Anyway, …

Your Content and Social Media at the Right Place and the Right Time

Here’s something just from my own observations in posting this blog and blasting it out to Facebook and Twitter. It’s all well and good to create content and then share it on the various social networks of the day but it’s not much point if you post it at a time when your target audience …

AutoRecover – Not a Substitute for Saving

The nose is well and truly back to the grindstone as university kicks off again with what is likely to be my final semester of study for my Masters of Science in Information Technology. Whilst the semester itself doesn’t kick off until tomorrow I am wanting to get a good head start on the assessment …

Giving Office 365 a Shot

Just a quick update. You might have read about my e-mail woes in yesterday’s article and not wanting to leave things lingering for too long I decided to pull the trigger and try out Office 365 free for thirty days. I have always been a big user of Outlook and moving the back end of …

IMAP – Seemed Like a Good Idea at the Time

A while ago, I recommended using IMAP instead of POP3 as the mail protocol of choice for when you want to keep your mail in sync across multiple devices such as computers, tablets and smartphones. I still stand behind this recommendation but you should be warned about how you go about using it. Unfortunately, I …

Microsoft SkyDrive Upgrade

Just a quick note for the SkyDrive users out there. Microsoft SkyDrive application for Windows has received an update but unfortunately the client software doesn’t look like it will automatically update itself. That’s a little disappointing that other Microsoft products use Windows Update as the updating mechanism such as Microsoft Office and Microsoft Security Essentials …
