Boyd Chan

My name is Boyd and I’m a Service Management Specialist with a knack for operational data gathering, transformation, analysis and reporting. In 2012, I obtained my Masters of Science in Information Technology through the University of New South Wales @ The Australia Defence Force Academy (UNSW@ADFA). I was also part of an online community known as the Panasonic Insider Crew in the capacity of “Insider Guru” for Panasonic Australia where I interacted with other tech enthusiasts and find out more about Panasonic's latest gadgets. I love technology, gadgets, and the Internet and maintain a keen interest in these areas locally, nationally, and globally. I hope by sharing my views on these topics that people will receive an honest point of view from someone with a genuine interest in these topics. Keys are a Nuisance – Smart Entry FTW!

Prius Smart Key

On the weekend, the missus and I were on the Gold Coast briefly and required a rental car to get us around. We ended up with a Toyota Camry (sadly not the hybrid model) which isn’t a bad car. Whilst not difficult to drive, I did find myself falling into the regular habits of driving …

Net Filter is a “Toxic Subject”

Senator Scott Ludlam, communications spokesman for the Greens, today labelled the net filter as a “toxic subject” which would be swept under the carpet until the federal election. Time has seemingly run out for Labor to introduce legislation into parliament and follow due process before the final sitting. What doesn’t help is that the Opposition …

Have Digital Photos Killed Off Printed Photos?

This evening, the missus and I attended a 50th birthday party and I noticed that a lot of people had digital cameras of some description (be it mobile phone cameras or “point and shoot” cameras). Despite that, there was a photo album making its way around the room for people to look through and add …

iPhone 4 – It’s not 4G!

One thing I have noticed lately is that people are incorrectly referring to the iPhone 4 as the iPhone 4G. This also occurred well before the official announcement of the device.  Sure, some people might not know any better but the technological purists amongst us do have a good point as to why we should …

Make the Resolution to Capture in High Definition

During the course of the last decade, consumers have had megapixels, “high definition” and refresh rates thrown at them. I would suggest that the average person would not know about these concepts in any great detail apart from generic marketing that larger numbers are better in terms of picture resolution. These days, there are fairly …

Smart Meters – Would You Use One?

Recently, I filled in a survey regarding the use of a smart meter for water usage which I am guessing was initiated by Sydney Water to help them get a feel for the demand for such a service. For those of you who don’t know about smart meters, they replace your analogue meter with a …

RSS – How Does It Work?

Example RSS XML

Yesterday, I looked at how people may be using RSS (Really Simple Syndication) without knowing it as well as how it might help make your consumption of digital information more efficient. Despite its name, people may think that RSS could be rather complicated but with a little time and understanding I reckon most people could figure it out …

RSS – Push vs Pull

Internet Explorer Address Bar

For those of you who don’t know, RSS stands for Really Simple Syndication and a lot of you would be using it, perhaps unknowingly. How so? RSS is a major part of how iTunes works particularly when checking for new podcasts and the update features contained within other pieces of software use RSS to check …
