Goldeneye Remake for Wii – Good or Bad?

A couple of days ago I came across an article on Neowin about a Goldeneye remake for the Nintendo Wii. For those of you who don’t know, Goldeneye was probably one of the best games to be released on the Nintendo 64 and received critical acclaim around the world. It was such a pity that Rare was snapped up by Microsoft and the rights to future James Bond games were won by another company.

So when I heard the news about a possible remake, I had mixed feelings. In my mind, the game was a classic in terms of its gameplay and whilst the graphics are rather dated by today’s standards I would hate to see something that attempted to emulate the gameplay with a mere facelift. It’s a bit like doing a cover of a legendary song and worrying if you will be up to scratch.

There have been other remakes such as Goldeneye: Source which looks very nice but it’s just not the same. Don’t get me wrong, I absolutely respect the time and effort the team has put into making this mod and I acknowledge that the team has sought to take the mod beyond the boundaries of the original game. I just reckon that if you are going to tread on anywhere near the same turf as a game such as Goldeneye, it better blow everyone away.

I guess we will have to wait and see how this remake turns out for the Wii but I maintain an expectation for the worst but a little hope for the best at the same time.
