It seems that with each iOS update older devices can get a bit slower in having to support new features on existing hardware. Unfortunately, you just can’t crack open your device and add more memory or swap out the CPU for something more powerful.
That said, there can be other causes of poor performance on iOS devices and a major one of them is putting too much stuff on your device. Just like computers, an iOS device needs some space in order to maintain stable and fluid operation. So whilst your device might have 8GB, 16GB, 32GB or 64GB of storage in it you can’t necessarily use every last byte.
Personally, I recommend that you leave at least 500MB to 1GB free on your device to make sure things don’t start to become slow and unresponsive. You can check this by going into iTunes and clicking on your device in the list on the left hand side.
At the bottom of the device screen you can see the space utilisation on your iOS device with the slice at the end of the bar showing how much space is available. In the picture above you can see that my device now has 4.1GB which is plenty (after I caught up on a backlog of video podcasts).
If you are pressed for space you might want to check how many podcasts you load on to your device or maybe remove some music that doesn’t get much airplay. Otherwise, you might have some massive apps (games are usually the culprit here) that you can uninstall if you haven’t used them in a while.
