What’s an Easter egg you ask?
Yes, there’s the chocolate egg-shaped variety that makes an appearance once a year but I’m not talking about those ones but another variety. In technology, Easter eggs can take on various forms such as hidden messages or a fun secret that would otherwise go unnoticed for most users. A couple of examples of Easter eggs are:
- the traffic cone in VLC wearing a Santa hat from December 18 through to January 1,
- typing do a barrel roll into Google to literally make the page do a barrel roll.
Android is no stranger to Easter eggs and the last few versions of the operating system are no exception.
On an Android smartphone or tablet simply do the following:
- Go into the Settings screen,
- Scroll down to About tablet or About phone towards the bottom of the list and tap it,
- Locate tne row for Android version then tap on it quickly until the screen changes.
Depending on the version of Android you are using you get a different Easter egg:
- Honeycomb will show a bee saysing “REZZZZZZZ…”,
- Ice Cream Sandwich will show an Android in an ice cream sandwich costume (if you hold your finger on top of it then the screen will change again to show a bunch of flying Androids),
- Jelly Bean will show a red jellybean on the screen (if you tap on it a face will appear and if you hold your finger on the jellybean a mini-game involving floating jellybeans will appear).
This more than likely won’t change the world for you but nonetheless it is something a little fun 🙂
