HTTPS Everywhere – An Easier Way to Force SSL

Last month, I covered how you could use Firefox with the NoScript add-on to force Secure HTTP (HTTPS) in order to protect yourself when using social networking websites on an unprotected wireless network or general usage anywhere else. The NoScript solution works fine but if you are less technically minded it could be a bit confusing to configure so there is another way to take all of that configuration out of the equation.
HTTPS Everywhere from the Electronic Frontier Foundation in collaboration with The Tor Project is another Firefox add-on that will force HTTPS on a number of websites, including:
- bit.ly
- Dropbox
- Evernote
- Facebook
- Google
- Hotmail
- Paypal
- Twitter
- Wikipedia
HTTPS Everywhere Preferences
All that is required is the installation of the add-on and a restart of the Firefox browser and off you go. Of course, if you like to tinker with stuff, you can write your own rulesets to cover other sites that support SSL.
Hopefully, there is an option that suits you between HTTPS Everywhere and NoScript!
