Virtual Machine Software on the Cheap

Given how keen I am to try out the Windows 8 preview that I touched on in yesterday’s blog entry I had to find suitable and compatible virtual machine (or VM for short) as the platform for my testing. I didn’t want to go through the process of creating a new partition on my computer and installing Windows 8 (particularly with a university assignment in flight).

So a VM was the way forward but which one?

I already had Windows Virtual PC (which doesn’t play nice with Windows 8 as the guest OS) so after a bit of browsing I came across Oracle VM VirtualBox. You can grab a copy here. It’s also compatible with earlier versions of Windows as well as many flavours of Linux, Solaris, BSD, OS/2 (if you are still into it) and Mac OS X Server (presumably only on Apple hardware but I’ll have to look into that).

Tomorrow, I’ll take you through how to setup VirtualBox for the Windows 8 installation as there are a couple of tweaks you should look at implementing prior to kicking off.
