What Does 3G+ Mean in Windows Phone 7?

Here’s a quick tip for tonight.

If you use Windows Phone 7 you might notice on the lock screen that you have a “3G+” symbol from time to time and wondered what it meant. You might be forgiven for thinking that you’ve unlocked some sort of turbo charged connectivity but there is quite a simple explanation for it.

All it means is that you have an HSPA (High Speed Packet Access) connection which provides faster download and upload speeds compared to a standard 3G connection. This should not be confused with HSPA+ that offers speeds beyond 14.4Mbps.

However, it makes me wonder how such connectivity will be displayed in Windows Phone 7 moving forward. Android makes clear distinction between 3G, HSPA (H), and HSPA (H+) on its display on the Samsung Galaxy S II whilst Apple lumps any kind of 3G connectivity under 3G.
