Disabling the Ringer on Your Windows Phone 8 Handset
Here’s a quick tip for Windows Phone 8 users.
If you’re looking to mute your phone while you are in a meeting or at the movies then all you need to do is turn on your device and hit the volume up or volume down button. Up in the top right corner will be an icon and if your ringer is currently enabled you will see a bell icon. Just tap on that and that will set your phone to vibrate mode (if you have vibration enabled) or to silent (if vibration is disabled).
To undo, just repeat the above and tap on the icon such that the bell icon returns.
If you’re just wanting to mute the ringer on an incoming call without rejecting it then just press the volume down button and that should take care of it. Otherwise, you can “flip to silence” simply by turning your phone face down when it is ringing and the ringtone will cease without rejecting the call (thanks to Ajo for reminding me of that feature!).
