Microsoft officially released its new mobile phone operating system (which it called “release to manufacturing” or RTM) today in what marks a potential comeback for the company. For a long time, the Windows Mobile market had stagnated and vendors had to resort to skinning the aging OS to try and make it keep up with the likes of Android and iOS.
I will certainly be keeping my eyes on this OS as it has received incredibly positive reviews from those lucky enough to get their hands on a device during development and those who have seen the most recent videos.
Microsoft has taken a cue from Apple in being strict about what sort of application will be approved for its new OS but has declared that it will be very open as to the reasons why an application has been rejected. An improvement upon Apple’s software model is that trial versions of applications actually download the whole application but run in a locked down state until the full version is purchased.
In a nutshell, I think we are seeing the return of Microsoft in the mobile space and I wouldn’t be surprised if we see a pierce three way battle with Apple and Android in the consumer mobile space. Whilst Blackberry and WebOS are also capable players I’m not convinced that there is room for them unless they innovate and capture market share on the double.
