Find Out What Makes a Website Tick

Here’s a quick tip.

If you’re curious as to what makes a particular website work you might have been in a quandary just trying to work it out by looking at the source code. Otherwise, you could try using telnet but that can be a bit fiddly if you’re not comfortable with a command line interface.

Otherwise, you could use a handy site called Built With.

It’s a cinch to use, just type in the address of the website you want to find out  more about and hit Enter. You can see the results for my blog’s website address here as an example. You’ll be able to see a lot of stuff, including:

  • web server information,
  • content management system information,
  • frameworks (PHP, ASP, etc),
  • advertising,
  • analytics / tracking,
  • JavaScript libraries,
  • webpage encoding.

Some websites may have other information not listed here or may have relatively less information – it really depends upon each individual website. However, this tool will help you save time trying to work out the various components that make a site work.
