Go-Go-Gadget Passport!

Well, the Australian Passport Office have managed to turn around my passport a day earlier than anticipated which means I now have a passport with embedded biometric identification. In other words, there is a chip in the middle of the passport which stores a JPEG of each biometric feature (in this case only the photo but other countries such as Austria and Greece also include fingerprints) as well as the personal information on the colour photo page.

These sorts of passports were issued from October 24th, 2005 onwards so I was one of a dwindling number who still had the old passports with just the photo and the MRZ (machine readable zone) at the bottom of the page. This also meant that I couldn’t use those fancy SmartGates in some of Australia’s international airports as well as in Auckland as you depart.

Anyway, I will be keen to see how well the facial recognition works at the SmartGate when I next get the chance!
