LogMeIn – Limiting Free Accounts to Ten Computers

Well, the gravy train wasn’t going to last forever but it was pretty good while it lasted.

If you don’t already know, LogMeIn is placing a restriction on the number of computers you can access through you LogMeIn account. Essentially, you will only be able to access the first ten computers that have LogMeIn free subscriptions – computers that have LogMeIn Pro assigned to them will not be counted as part of this limit.

There is currently a deal going to subscribe to LogMeIn Central which will remove the limit altogether but that will cost US$199 for the first year which then goes up to $299 for each subsequent year. For people who use LogMeIn to run a business then maybe this will be a small cost to ensure that your ability to support your customers is uninterrupted. However, if you use LogMeIn to support family and friends with their various computer problems then this could be viewed as a significant cost that may see varying amounts of compensation for your time.

The workaround at this stage may be to get your friends and family to create their own LogMeIn accounts with their own computers attached to the account. Ten computers each should be plenty in most circumstances. You could also get them to trial LogMeIn Central and then add your account as a secondary account that can login to the computer attached to their account. This allocation should remain in place even after the LogMeIn Central trial finishes up although editing this permission could be limited in the future (you should be able to delete the permission but not add or modify existing ones).

At any rate, some people may be looking around for another free alternative but using the above approach might help you get around that and stop your persona LogMeIn account from being cluttered up by computers belonging to other people (some of which may no longer be in active service).
