Graduation Day – Instant Photography

Well, it’s official – I have graduated and I’ve got the testamur to prove it (that is the bit of paper with my certification on it). I got to parade about in academic regalia for a few hours and have some photos taken of myself with my wife and parents to remember the occasion.

Not having had academic photos taken since I left school it is incredible to note how things have changed. I remember back in Year 12 in 1999 you had to order your photos in advance of photos actually being shot and without the ability to look at the photo and decide if you wanted them or not. Plus, you had to wait weeks for the photos to arrive before you would see how good or bad they turned out.

How did we ever cope?

After the graduation ceremony yesterday afternoon we all retired to the cadet’s mess at UNSW@ADFA in Canberra and had the opportunity to have photos taken. I did preorder and prepay for a photo package but it was really convenient to be able to view the photos on a computer straight after capture and choose the best ones or elect to reshoot if required. The best part of all was being able to walk away with great hard copies of the photos as well as digital copies on USB stick. This might be handy in schools where some students are careless with photos and they get creased or torn when floating around inside school bags on the journey home.

Interestingly, there was also the option to have “green screen” photos where a background would be digitally inserted into the background to make it look like you were in a particular location such as the front of the university. I didn’t fancy any of those to be honest but there were many who were – horses for courses 🙂

Anyway, this makes it a snap to share with family and friends interstate and saves on the cost of printing out and mailing copies to everyone as well. This is really a great benefit of digital photography.
