A Rude Surprise in WhatsApp

Here’s something to keep an eye out for if you use WhatsApp.

You might want to think twice if you receive a message along these lines:

WhatsApp Surprise!

You’ve got a prize.

Confirm your WhatsApp! phone number [xxxxxxxxxxx] right away.

Spim on WhatsApp

Spim on WhatsApp

This is called “spim” or “spam instant messaging” designed to both confirm that the mobile number is legitimate as well as potentially having your device loaded up with malware if you visit the link. Simply ignore the message and delete it to avoid any problems.

I received this and replied with a nice ‘go away’, sort of. Is my phone now riddled with germs?

    1. No, your phone won’t be riddled with germs! 🙂

However, at worst you’ve confirmed to this party that you have an active service on your mobile number linked to WhatsApp. They would use this confirmation to spam you over ordinary SMS in the future which is why ignoring and deleting these messages are best.
