Limit Ad Tracking Under iOS 6
With the update to iOS 6 for Apple mobile devices comes a new way to track your online activities without using the UUID burnt into the device. This new IFA number of “Identifier for Advertisers” is a random but anonymous number allocated to each user and device combination. However, unlike UUIDs which are permanently burnt into every Apple devices and remain static, IFAs are temporary and disposable identifiers. You could perhaps think of them like the numbers your get at a deli counter to make a crude comparison.
Unfortunately, IFAs are enabled by default under iOS 6 and if you want to turn it off it’s hidden away in a place other than where you would normally expect it to reside (i.e. the privacy settings). If you’re keen to turn it off then this is how to do it:
- Go into Settings,
- Tap on About,
- Scroll all the way to the bottom and then tap Advertising,
- Turn on Limit Ad Tracking.
It doesn’t take long to do but perhaps something that could have been set as the default by Apple.
