Just a quick one tonight. The title might seem obvious to most people but it’s something worth mentioning anyway given the speculation around a refreshed iPhone and iPad being released before the end of the year.
With the release of new devices (iPods, iPhones and iPads) there is usually a prerequisite update for iTunes to enable these latest devices to work usually coinciding with the release of a new version of iOS. For consumers, updating iTunes is not usually a big deal with the Apple Software Update application usually notifying you of an upgrade if you aren’t that proactive to force an update check yourself.
However, for those of us who work in corporate environments where a particular version of iTunes is prescribed as part of the Standard Operating Environment (or SOE) then it might be a case of pleading with your desktop administrators or tough luck. For instance, if you are stuck on iTunes 9.1 then while you could activate and sync the original iPad you can’t do so with the iPhone 4 nor the iPad 2. It might also prevent you from using your brand new iPhone as wireless modem as the drivers wouldn’t have been installed on the computer as part of iTunes.
So remember, not all versions of iTunes will work with every iOS device but your best bet is to make sure you have the latest version
