As a bit of a gamer and someone that fancies Half-Life 2 and Team Fortress 2 it really got me annoyed when I couldn’t play them after a recent update to Steam or one of the games themselves (my hunch is the recent Saxxy Award update for TF2). What I did find was that reducing the screen resolution in the game helped but it was quite unsatisfying to say the least when you don’t run at the native resolution of the screen (things like jagged lines, fuzziness, etc). That aside, I could gradually increase the resolution back up to the maximum and then play my game but I would encounter the same issue the next time I wanted to get some gaming in.
Frustrating to say the least.
However, I did find a solution which I thought I would share with the world. This is what I did:
- Open Steam,
- Right click on the game (Team Fortress 2 in my case) and click on “Properties”,
- Select the “General” tab,
- Click the “Set Launch Options…” button,
- Type in “-autoconfig” in the box then click “OK”,
- Start up your game and change your video resolution to match the native resolution of your screen,
- Try playing the game (and hopefully it should work),
- Close the game,
- Remove “-autoconfig” from your launch options.
I can only guess that something corrupted my video settings for the game which caused the whole game to crash and adding in the “-autoconfig” option rebuilt the settings based upon what the game thought was best given my hardware configuration. This tip is also handy for when you set the video resolution in the game beyond what your screen can support and getting a blank screen (despite your video card supporting higher resolutions).
