Just a quick one for the night.
A little while ago a piece of jailbreak software was released for Windows Phone 7 but there has been no actual use for it yet on consumer phones. Well, someone has been working away and has come up with a small homebrew application to fix an issue with Windows Phone 7 concerning the inability to add custom ring tones (apparently a feature slated for release in January).
The ChevronWP7 custom ringtone manager essentially pushes a specially formatted WMA audio file to an application on the phone from a desktop application on a Windows computer. You will need a few things to get it working though, such as:
- Microsoft .NET Framework 4.0,
- Ringtones in WMA audio format encoded @ 48KHz (you can use Expression Encoder 4 to help you),
- Windows Phone 7 Developer SDK (to deploy the special XAP application to your phone).
If you can manage all of that, you can load up to five ringtones to your Windows Phone – for everyone else I would probably recommend you wait for the update to be released by Microsoft in the new year as it is not for the faint of heart!
