From what I have gathered reading numerous forums and blogs, finding a good media player has been somewhat a quest for the holy grail for Android users. DoubleTwist has been popular as it can be paired up with client software on a regular computer for content management however it has not been without its problems and bugs. Other people don’t mind the stock player but find it somewhat bland and disinteresting.
Today, one of the stalwarts of the media player industry enter the Android area, namely WINAMP. Incidentally, WINAMP is actually a recursive acronym meaning “WINAMP Is Not A Multimedia Player” which seems to be ironic these days as that is exactly it would seem but when it was first released in the 1990s its ability to playback MP3 files quickly gained itself popularity amongst the masses. It was also well respected for being incredibly lean on system resources (which were very limited at the time anyway compared to the many gigabytes of RAM modern computers usually possess).
One major feature of WINAMP for Android and the latest WINAMP 5.59 beta is the ability to wirelessly sync over Wi-Fi. This certainly brings new competition to DoubleTwist (a good attempt but far from polished) and The Missing Sync (which unfortunately didn’t work for me and support faded away when it got too difficult for them) which may have had the playing field much to themselves. I am going to give it a try over the next few days and I will report back on my findings.
At this stage, I may have found a solution for my content management between my desktop, Samsung Galaxy S and iPad.
