Test Drive Update 3 for Windows Phone 8

Something for Windows Phone 8 users out there.

If you’re interested in trying out “Update 3” (also known as GDR3 previously) for Windows Phone 8 then you might be interested in checking out the Preview for Developers app which will enable your phone to receive this update ahead of the official roll out by carriers. This update is intended for developers to build and test apps against the latest update but there is nothing stopping regular folks from taking advantage of side-stepping the carriers so long as you fulfill one of the following conditions:

  1. you have an active Windows Phone Dev Centre account,
  2. you have an active App Studio account,
  3. you have a registered developer device (or a developer unlocked phone).

This may rule many people out off the bat but the second option is perhaps the easist. Just head on over to http://apps.windowsstore.com/ and build a rudimentary app. This will enable your Microsoft account to download the latest pre-release updates without having to shell out cash.

Mind you, if you need to roll back the update then you are stuck but you will be able to receive all future official releases so be careful if you aren’t willing to muck up your phone (but the risk would be low).
