Here’s another gadget initiative that the iPhone and Android smartphone users out there might fancy as an auxiliary screen or control for their devices.
The Pebble E-paper Watch is not quite the “Dick Tracy” watch that people have been after but I reckon it’s pretty close and a whole lot more.
In short, this is an app-extensible watch that will interface with your iPhone or Android smartphone over Bluetooth. This enables some pretty neat functionality such as:
- Notifications:
- Caller ID
- E-mail,
- Calendar
- Facebook messages,
- SMS (Android only),
- Twitter,
- Weather,
- Exercise information:
- Cycling and running stats,
- App extensibility:
- Install more apps to cater for the functionality you’re after or change the styling of the interface.
I reckon this is a pretty exciting little gadget and when I showed my wife she wanted to know where she could get one immediately! Needless to say, we’ll be chipping in for this project for two smartwatches which are due for delivery in September. Anyway, if you think this might be interesting then consider supporting the project and getting one of these smartwatches for two thirds of the anticipated retail cost (so US$100 instead of US$150).
The watch isn’t designed to work with BlackBerry, Windows Phone 8 or Palm devices at the moment but that could perhaps change down the line.
This is another great example of some of the gems you can find on Kickstaters.
