Stop Windows Update Taking Over the Shutdown Button
Another quick tip for tonight.
Sometimes, when you want to shutdown your computer you might notice that the shutdown button looks like this in Windows 7:
Shut down and install updates button
When pressed, this button will finish the installation of pending updates for Windows and then shutdown the computer. Sometimes, this isn’t convenient and if you have a habit of just hitting the shutdown button then your computer could take much longer to turn off than you would prefer.
Luckily, there is a registry hack you can undertake to stop this from happening by doing the following:
- Click “Start”,
- Type in “regedit” then press Enter,
- Browse to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\WindowsUpdate\AU (creating the necessary keys if they don’t exist),
- Create a 32-bit DWORD value called “NoAUAsDefaultShutdownOption” and once created double click on it and type in “1” as the value,
- Click “OK” and close the Registry Editor.
Windows should now leave your shutdown button alone from now on.
