Keeping Tabs on Australian Fires

At present, in Australia fires are tracked on a state and territory level which makes it hard to get a consolidated view at a national level to see what is going on. This might not be a big deal if your family, friends and properties are largely located in one state or territory but if they are interstate then that can present a challenge.

This week, Google released an Australian Crisis Map which fills this gap rather nicely by aggregating data from the various websites and plotting them on a familiar Google Maps interface. At the moment, only fires are listed but I would expect other types of crises will be added over time.

Of course, if you want the most recent information the best place to go is directly to the authority’s website as there could be delays in using Google’s solution.
