Searching For Carriage Returns and Tabs in Excel Spreadsheets

Most people know how to use the search and replace function in Excel spreadsheets but it can be a tricky task if what you’re looking for is a non-printable character like a carriage return (i.e. hitting Enter on the keyboard).

Thankfully, it’s easy enough to do once you know how šŸ™‚

In the Find and Replace box, click in theĀ Find box and do the following:

  1. Hold down theĀ Alt key and typeĀ 0010 on the number pad,
  2. Let go of the Alt key.

The box will appear blank but don’t let that put you off – try searching and if your spreadsheet or selected data has carriage returns in it then those results should show up.

If you’re interested in finding tabs, simply replaceĀ 0010 with 0009 when typing on the keypad before kicking off the search.
