It’s a bit unusual to have back to back unboxings but I am not one to complain!
Today, I unbox the Current Cost EnviR real-time home electricity monitor which I bought from SmartNow (fantastic customer service and highly recommended). I covered this device at a high level in a prior article. This device is designed to measure the power coming in through your mains in order to provide live readings as to how much power is being consumed by the household and the cumulative cost based upon the tariffs imposed by your electricity provider. My motivation to pick this up was to keep a lid on our electricity consumption and to catch those power guzzling devices before they put a huge dent in the bill (damn you, oil heaters).
I do mention that you need to have a licensed electrician install this device in Australia and this is very important if any mains cabling is concealed behind power meter housing or something similar. Even if the cabling is exposed I would err on the side of caution and call a sparky in just in case. I’ll have to call one in to install the measurement clamp for the transmitter at any rate (and that will be a prerequisite for a preview video showing the device in use).
FYI – the video will be available in up to 720p (YouTube can take a little while to process the higher resolutions) if you right click on the video and choose “Watch on YouTube” and change the resolution setting.
