Here’s a heads up for those of you out there with HTC handsets with locked bootloaders – starting with the HTC Sensation you now have the opportunity to unlock the bootloader in order to load custom ROMs!
However, there are a couple of things to note:
- Unlocking the bootloader of your phone does not remove the SIM lock put in place by your carrier (so you can’t go using SIMs from other carriers),
- HTC advises that not all claims made under warranty that occur as a result of unlocking the bootloader are covered.
- This point seems very contentious to me as they provide a worst case example of the handset overheating as a result of the bootloader being unlocked. If other manufacturers can cover the handset with unlocked bootloaders with stock ROMs then HTC can do it too (it’s just a matter of time before this is tested out).
Personally, it looks like someone gave the HTC legal department too much red cordial and lollies. I can understand that there are limitations in what can be covered in given circumstances but I reckon there is more latitude in this situation.
Anyway, if you want to check out how the unlock process works click here and to read more about the conditions around unlocking your bootloader (and which HTC devices will support the process) then click here.
