If you’ve been following my blog you might of read about a service called DoNotTrackMe and some of the fantastic security capabilities it brings to your browser: With the ability to stop websites from tracking you as you browse across the internet and mask your e-mail address you’re ahead of the game when it comes to targeted advertising and spam.
However, as part of the 3.0 upgrade to DoNotTrackMe one of the premium features is being made available for free from Black Friday (November 29th) all the way through to Boxing Day (26th December), specifically the disposable credit card functionality.
You might be wondering why you may want disposable credit cards?
It’s such a pain to cancel a credit card and have a new one issued as often you can have direct debits hooked up which also need to be reprovisioned on the new card. Plus, you don’t know what sort of security online shops have when it comes to credit card information. As we have seen in numerous instances, hackers can steal databases containing unencrypted information that can also house credit card numbers and other sensitive information.
So, along similar lines to the masked e-mail component of MaskMe which hides your real e-mail address behind one or more disposable e-mail addresses (you can use one for every mailing list or service you sign up for) you can do the same thing with credit cards. This is beneficial as you never end up revealing your actual credit card details to these parties as it is safer never to divulge the true details where possible. You can use one disposable credit card for a single transaction or maybe one for each service – it’s up to you. Plus, you can set a limit on each masked card so you can limit or prevent overcharging.
It really puts you back in control of credit card billing and limits risk exposure.
The other major draw card is that using masked cards makes it difficult for others to work out your purchasing habits as all transactions end up being marked as being billed by Abine on your credit card statement. This is great for privacy but at the same time it could mess with the automatic budgeting tools found in some online banking portals these days so something to keep in mind.
At this stage, masked cards are only available inside the USA which is a shame as I would really love to have that capability but we will see if that expands internationally. However, you should check out the rest of the services that Abine offers and start protecting your online privacy now.
