Incoming Gadget – Huawei E589 4G Mini Wi-Fi Modem
Just a heads up that I got myself a new mobile broadband modem in the form of a Huawei E589 4G Mini Wi-Fi modem this week to replace my existing 3G USB modem.
I thought this would be a suitable replacement given the inability of the Microsoft Surface RT tablet to connect to cellular networks by itself as well as my 3G USB modem being unsupported under Windows RT. I figured it was more prudent to get a Wi-Fi hotspot that could run under its own battery power and supply internet connectivity to other devices besides my tablet. This would come in handy when on travel or holiday interstate where hotel internet offerings are less than desirable.
Anyway, stay tuned for the unboxing and preview video coming shortly!

Is the Huawei E589 4G Mini Wi-Fi modem compatable with Windows8? Microsoft are offering discounted upgrades to Windows8 up till the 31/1/13 but the Upgrade Assistant tells me I need to upgrade the driver on my E589 Wi-Fi modem? I wonder if Huawei has an upgraded driver?

The modem should be compatible with Windows 8 but I think that only covers the micro SD storage component. You’d normally connect to the internet through the E589 via Wi-Fi and not by USB.
