A few days back I wrote about an app for Windows 8 and Windows RT to manage podcasts in the absence of a native solution from Microsoft. I had high hopes for SlapDash Podcasts Pro but I am sad to report that it falls short.
Don’t get me wrong, I love the layout and the ability to subscribe to podcasts but the act of subscribing doesn’t automate the downloading of podcasts. One of the critical functions of a podcast manager is downloading podcasts when they become available and then tracking your progress through each podcast until you finish each one. Thankfully, SlapDash Podcasts Pro does the latter beautifully across devices via the cloud. However, if you are wanting to simply stream podcasts and keep track of your listening position then you should be golden.
If you can look past the inability to automatically download podcasts and kick off podcasts yourself then the user experience is very nice. I did experience some issues with choppy audio in video podcasts when the screen switched off every now whilst the same files played through the stock video player had no issue.
I guess the big downside to SlapDash Podcasts Pro is when you finish listening to a podcast and have no further use for it then you would expect that deleting it from within the app would delete the podcast off the device. What actually happens is that the podcast ends up in the Recycle Bin on the desktop. This means if you go through a lot of podcasts then you are going to eventually use up all the space on devices with limited storage. While this may be somewhat acceptable on desktop and laptop computers this is not a great idea for tablets.
As it stands, SlapDash Podcasts Pro unfortunately doesn’t fulfill my requirements so I will have to look elsewhere but this app may still do the trick for you if you can work with what it has to offer at present.
