In a story picked up by SMH today, the South Australian Attorney-General has been quoted having said:
“I feel that my family and I are more at risk from gamers than we are from the outlaw motorcycle gangs who also hate me.”
Leading on from my earlier blogs on video game classification and the attack on online anonymity involving Michael Atkinson, I’m not at all surprised that a lot of people are annoyed with him. I would have to concede that stalking him at his place of residence is going a bit too far. Perhaps this particular gamer hadn’t levelled up enough to be able to use the “loss of electoral seat” potion and had to resort to old school pen and paper.
Seriously, guys and girls – grow up. Engaging in silly acts such as visiting the home of the Attorney-General and sliding a threatening note under the door simply provides ammunition against introducing an R18+ category for video games and also food for thought for those swinging voters amongst us (who may or may not be aware of the full story). If you really feel the urge to do something, I would strongly encourage you to pursue a more productive means of voicing your opinion such as supporting the Gamers4Croydon Party (if you have that option), supporting GetUp for relevant campaigns or fill in the Online Discussion Paper Submission & EB Games Petition.
As for the Attorney-General, part of me thinks he should deal with it and move on. The other part thinks that he should probably invest in some home security if he’s worried about bikers let alone a gamer.
