Here’s a quick tip for those of us in Sydney that live or work on the North Shore or in the surrounding areas.
Back in November 2010, the RTA rolled out a service in pilot for a period of twelve months to notify people about incidents and traffic flow alterations on the F3 which is the major arterial up to the north coast. Unfortunately, all it takes is one accident to close the F3 and it can make a drive home much longer.
Anyway, you can sign up for alerts when something happens on the F3 and elect to receive them a number of ways, specifically:
- E-mail,
- Phone call (via text-to-speech),
- SMS.
Before you can sign up for the service though you need to “take the pledge” and declare what sort of license you hold. After that, you can provide your contact details for the various methods of communication you want to utilise. Personally, I use e-mail and SMS as I can be notified if I am at home, work or out and about if there is a problem on the F3.
I don’t use the telephone option though as on one very bad day it was annoying to receive so many phone calls and, if I bump the calls, delete them from my voicemail. There is also nothing stopping the F3 Alerts system from sending notifications at any time of day which could be problematic if one night something terrible happens on the freeway. It would be great if there was some sort of setting to allow an allowed window of time for phone calls (or even SMS messages as some people might like that option).
At any rate, you can visit the F3 Alerts page here – it might just save you from sitting in traffic and it’s free!
