I am somewhat agnostic to the mobile operating systems I use on smartphones and tablets in that I can pick up any of the mainstream platforms and start using them fairly quickly. That said, I do hold Windows Phone and Android in favour over iOS but they they all have their strengths which align better to the personal requirements of some better than others.
Anyway, if there is one thing that is missing with most smartphones and tablets it is a good user manual. Those have gradually fallen by the wayside over the years in favour of optical discs or even online PDFs. However, I’ve yet to see an informative guide on how to use Windows Phone 8. Don’t get me wrong, I think that Windows Phone 8 has a degree of intuition to it similar to iOS and Android (albeit without the traditional static grid of icons) but a reference guide can never hurt if you’re a bit wet behind the ears.
Fortunately, Paul Thurrott has written a fairly comprehensive guide for Windows Phone 8 here which weights in at 647 pages. You might not want to read it cover to cover but you may want to keep it handy if you ever have one of those moments when you run into something you haven’t quite worked out. The other fantastic thing is that Paul will be keeping this book up to date with new features and updates that trickle through from Microsoft so you won’t miss out on anything.
For a free guide I don’t think you can really complain about it so grab a copy and stash it somewhere handy (maybe even on your phone) so you can quickly look up something whilst on the go.
