Just been on holidays in Thailand for about a week and with any international trip there is the issue of remaining in touch with those back home just in case. Using your mobile overseas can be costly and while there are alternatives such as Truphone sometimes the local offering may be even better.
Upon reaching the immigration and passport control area in Thailand I found that all of the counters had brochures with free prepaid SIM cards attached and some very low calling rates. For instance, calls to Australian landlines were as low as THB1.5 a minute (that’s AU$0.05 a minute at the moment) with calls to Autralian mobiles from THB6 a minute (AU$0.20 a minute). That’s streets ahead of what an Aussie carrier will offer you when roaming.
You can also get access to some generous data plans at THB129 (AU$4.30) for 200MB or THB399 (AU$12.95) for 1.25GB. However, you will only get GPRS or EDGE speeds at best which may make you cry if you are used to 3G or 4G speeds back home. Still, it is better than nothing and certainly better than paying $20 per megabyte to your carrier in roaming data charges!
