One very handy feature in Windows RT is its ability for apps to be more sensible about their network usage through awareness of metered connections. Most often these will be cellular connections (i.e. 3G or 4G dongles) but sometimes they can be Wi-Fi connections such as a cellular hotspot with Wi-Fi.
By default, Wi-Fi networks will be treated as unmetered so if you have apps that will wait for unmetered connections to execute background downloads then you might be in for a rude surprise when the quota is exhausted faster than expected.
Luckily, you can designate a network connection as being metered as follows:
- Tap the Window button to get to the Start Screen,
- Swipe in from the right of the screen,
- Tap Settings,
- Tap on the network icon (the top left icon of the six at the bottom of the menu),
- In the Networks list, tap and hold on the desired network until a translucent square appears then let go,
- Tap on Set as metered connection.
That will set a connection as non-metered. If you want to reverse this setting just do the same as the above but tap Set as non-metered connection in the final step.
