The weekend just gone past I had the opportunity to unbox the Apple iPhone 5 prior to getting it setup and activated for my mother-in-law to replace her iPhone 4. As per usual, you’ll get to see what is in the box as well as a quick look at the phone itself, a comparison of the box against that of the iPhone 4S and a size comparison of the phone against the Samsung Galaxy S III (my current smartphone).
The iPhone 5 comes with a pair of the new EarPods which are supposed to be a step up from the standard earphones included with prior models of the iPhone. Unfortunately, I didn’t get a chance to try these out myself so that will need to be left for another time. They did come in a nice plastic case though which should make storage and safekeeping easier for those who travel quite a bit or don’t fancy having to untangle their earphones before each use.
This is also the first iPhone to sport a lightning connector which is significantly than the traditional thirty pin dock connector as well as being omni-directional. In the short term, this new connector will perhaps be more of a hindrance than a convenience given relative scarcity of cables – just try asking people at work if they have an iPod cable compared or a lightning cable and see what happens (unless you work at an Apple store where the results will perhaps be skewed).
Anyway, here’s the video of the unboxing and a quick glance at the phone itself:
FYI – the video will be available in up to 1080p (YouTube can take a little while to process the higher resolutions) if you click on the YouTube icon under the video and change the resolution setting there.
