Fitbit Aria Wi-Fi Smart Scale and the Cold

Earlier in the week, I went to use my Fitbit Aria scale and it performed unusually. When I stood on the scale, it showed “SENSING” on the display for a bit before telling me to step off followed by “THINKING” being displayed. After a little while, “ERR” showed up briefly before disappearing. I tried taking my weight measurement again but the same sequence of events occurred.

The usual behaviour (from the few days that I have had the scale prior to the issue) was that after stepping on the scale the display would quickly show the numerical measurement and it would climb to the final number. No numbers displayed at all on two separate mornings earlier this week..

I tried removing the batteries for thirty seconds and putting them back in but the problem persisted. I then reset the scales (by inserting a pin in the tiny hole on the underside of the scale), rejoined the Wi-Fi network and tried again but problem persisted.

What seemed to work was moving the scale off the tiles in the bathroom, putting it on the carpet and then stepping on the scale to see what happened. Of course, using a scale on carpet won’t give a proper measurement but I wanted to see if the behaviour of the scale would change. After some thinking, I eventually got a numerical readout which was attributed to a guest measurement. Putting it back on the bathroom tiles worked after that point.

Anyway, the morning after the first incident, I went into the bathroom and the same problem occurred (sensing, thinking, error) and neither my wife or I could use it. I pulled the batteries out again for thirty seconds but that didn’t fix it. So, while my wife had her shower I just put the scale in the bed under the covers. I figured that maybe the cold temperature might have been causing a problem and maybe warming it up might help. After about ten minutes in the bed I put it on the tiles and it seemed to work without complaint and a numerical readout was fairly instant after stepping upon it.

As it is Winter in Australia at the time of writing we do keep the bathroom door shut so the warm air doesn’t escape through the skylight. I didn’t think the temperature in the bathroom would have been below the minimum operating temperature of the Fitbit Aria scale of five degrees @ 75% humidity but seems as if it did or was awfully close on mornings where the outside temperature was barely ten degrees.

I know this device has only been out for a little while but thought I’d write this up just in case others had run into the same issues before logging support tickets with Fitbit. Just don’t let the scale get too cold and it should work fine (however much of an inconvenience it may be in the long run).

Edit: Potentially, the ERR message could be caused by other issues, including:

  • being too far away from the Wi-Fi router/access point (move either closer to the other),
  • interference from other Wi-Fi/Bluetooth devices or devices operating in the 2.4GHz band (either move/deactivate these devices or move your Wi-Fi network to another channel with less interference),
  • router requiring a reboot just in case it has gone stale after running for a while.

Hi, I just got mine and I have the same problems. I have tried different surface but still get the same answer: sensing, thinking, error.

I don’t know how to solve it, but I live in Mexico and here we don’t have any cold weather….

    Do you have any advise?

    Thanks

    1. Okay, that’s quite interesting!

Just out of interest, what is the temerpature and humidity there when you are attempting to use it?

Have you also tried resetting it?

I received a FitBit Aria as a gift and it had the ERR issue straght out of the box. Here is what I did:
      – Contact FitBit support
      – Answer their questions, perform their troubleshooting
      – Once they determined it was a problem with the scale, they replaced it.
      – Whole process took less than a week.

Note: I did not have a receipt. They simply asked me to send them a photo of the unit with the service case number written on a piece of paper in the picture. I did not have to send the old unit back.

If you are getting the ERR code, email FitBit support and they will make it right.

I have the same problem. My fitbit scale has never worked. Just the Sensing, Thinking, Err sequence. Temp and humidity are very moderate where I live. Hope someone can help!!

    1. If it has not worked out of the box I would be more inclined to think that the device itself is faulty. Have you tried contact Fitbit about it yet?

After just purchasing the Fitbit Aria scale in color black, opened and followed the setup procedures and now with much frustration the little round display window is showing ERR after sensing and thinking. I have gone through the setup now about a dozen times with the same result. My house temp is around 74 degree’s with low humidity.

I will try warming up the scale in another room and see if its temp related? If nothing helps after warming up the scale, I guess I’ll return, but would like to solve the problem as it is a cool scale and would be great to use all the fuctions along with my fitbit ultra.

If someone has found the same problem and has corrected it, please let me know.

    Thanks!!!

    1. One other thing I can suggest is putting the scale on a soft surface like carpet and then try putting something on it. This has coaxed the scale to work for me but this was when we had colder temperatures in the middle of Winter. Your mileage may vary!

    Okay, same issue here.

Just purchased and taken out of box. Did setup, etc. ERR. Setup again, etc. ERR. Tried on carpet, tried on lino, its about 20 degree celcius in the house.

I don’t seem to have much luck with fitbit products.

Surely a scale should be designed to sit on the floor in a bathroom and not have temperature issues!?

    1. I agree with you – a scale should be robust enough to work in the bathroom despite fluctuating humidity (either from the shower or weather conditions) and temperatures.

It’s a shame because I think the scale itself looks great and is simply designed but is let down by these errors with no indication as to the underlying problem.

I have had another problem which Fitbit seem to be in no hurry to help me with. I adopted a new eating pattern involving fasting on some days. I dropped several pounds and the Aria listed my weight as a Guest. The setup says you can then change that to whoever is registered but it doesn’t record body fat for a guest and doesn’t record the weight to your dashboard. I have sent screen shots and 3 days later nothing……… no help. I am a pissed off Fitbit customer at the moment.

    1. That’s not good to hear at all, Peter!

Please let me know how things go, it’ll be interesting to hear how your problem is resolved.

I have the same error message; just purchased and taken out of the box. My husband and me tried all what was proposed above but nothing seems to work. We are still having the same error message. Was anyone able to fix this problem? Does anyone have a new suggestion? Thanks!

    1. Hi Carole,

My issues with the Fitbit Aria scale have all been due to cold temperatures and subsequently rectified after being warmed up (either in front of warm air from an aircon or under a blanket).

The Fitbit forums still don’t seem to offer much in the way of other solutions at the moment.

I live in Dubai… so it’s quite HOTTTT (yesterday alone it was 48 degrees Celsius). Maybe the AC inside the house is affecting this. I am gonna try putting it outside for an hour or so and try it again..

I really hope it will work! I am already using the Fitbit tracker and I love it!

        Thanks for your help…

        1. Hello to Dubai! 🙂

The scales are rated for usage between 5C (75% humidity) to 35C (45% humidity) but I would guess that your AC is keeping the temperature well within this range which might leave the relative humidity as a potential issue.

I am going to throw something out there which might seems a little weird. Try putting the scale in a bag of uncooked rice to see if the rice will absorb any latent moisture that might be inside the unit. I would leave it in there (completely covered) for 24 – 48 hours and then give it another shot.

I resort to using rice when I am trying to prevent water damage to other gadgets like laptops after unfortunate accidents.

I just bought an aria and can’t get it to connect to my wifi… It just says “wifi err” after trying to join for 30 seconds. Did anyone else experience that? It is very annoying, I can’t even use the scale… Just stuck with it flashing active setup at me.

    1. Are you attempting to join it to and 802.11n only network on 2.4GHz? If so, the Fitbit Aria scale won’t connect to it as it will only connect to 802.11b or 802.11g networks.

Mine aria worked great for about a month, then fell off wifi. Now I can’t get it to connect anymore. I sent logs to fitbit support, but heard nothing back yet. Mine is a 802.11 b/g/n network, so it SHOULD work.

I’ve tried to reconnect it lots of times, but all I keep getting is “WIFI ERR”. This is so annoying.

        1. Just for clarification – is your network set to N-only or B+G+N?

While the hardware can support all three simultaneously the router software can be set to offer only particular types of Wi-Fi or combinations thereof.

This is a frustrating issues that appears to be affecting a growing number of people though.

            • Behan on November 24, 2012 at 00:58

Set to auto b/g/n. That’s the thing it DID work for the first couple of weeks, then stopped syncing. So something changed, and I can’t for the life of me figure out what. The most annoying part is that it isn’t something we did as it stopped working while we were away. It was syncing happily for the first few days while we were away (according to the web interface) and then it just stopped. And it won’t talk to my wifi AP anymore.

          I have the same problem:

After the scale did a firmware update today, it stopped being able to connect to my wifi network. Tried doing the setup again but keep getting a wifi error… tried using my iPhone to do the setup, tried the computer website method, and tried the software download method… nothing works. It’s very frustrating that it stopped working after only two days!

After reading all these posts, I think I’ll just return it and go with Withings…

            • Behan on March 30, 2013 at 08:19

They actually sent me a replacement aria which setup fine, and worked again, for about a month. But again it broken in exactly the same way. I now have 2 aria’s which won’t connect to my wifi. Won’t sync weight, and when I try to re-set them up, all I get is “wifi err”. I’m am very annoyed now.

I have the same problem. Occassionally it will work but then it goes through the same pattern: sensing, step on, thinking.

  1. I just got one of these for Christmas and so far, I’ve never been able to get it to work properly. I finally got it on the wireless after I remembered that I had the low signaling rates disabled on my WLAN only to get the “Thinking… ERR” every time I’ve tried to use it. It doesn’t seem to matter what temperature the scale is or anything else. I think the Aria was a great idea but poorly executed.

Same here. Been trying to get it on wifi for three days. Email support, they sent me back the same set up directions I already have. Would love to use it. But I think I will take it back.

    1. It seems that some are luckier than others – it’s a real shame as the scale is available at a good price compared to Withings scales but the quality and support don’t seem to be backing up the Fitbit offering.

I certainly hope that Fitbit isn’t using this as a “public beta” and expecting early adopters of the product to cover the costs of testing.

After six months my aria doesn’t seem to be able to sense when I step off. It just stays in “step off” mode until I jiggle it a bit, then it says starts thinking and throws out a weight close to mine but a pound or two off. It also has become very sensitive to vibration, so it will turn itself on if I walk by it. I had it on a tile floor in the bathroom and we live in a warm, humid country. I had a hunch that maybe it had to do with the humidity or possibly the irregularity of our bathroom floor threw it off (our tiles are small).

I wrote fitbit but no response so far….

    1. Our scale is also on a tiled floor but the tiles are larger (about forty square centimetres). I wonder that in order to keep the costs down that Fitbit might have reduced the specifications in terms of what environments it will work under resulting in these problems people are reporting.

That said, it sounds like Fitbit really need to answer for all of these problems coming out of the woodwork.

  2. I found this blog when I was searching for how to resolve my brand new Fitbit Aria’s wifi problems… Went through set up several times, aways failed “ERR”… sent the error logs to FitBit and finally spoke to customer support. They concluded I had a defective scale and I exchanged it for a new one. I was very excited to receive the new scale, and then the same thing happened. I ended up getting a new router, and then it worked perfectly the first time. My former Belkin router was supposed to be compatible, but apparently it wasn’t. If you have an older router, you may want to check this. Everything has worked perfectly since replacing the router.

    1. Thanks for sharing your experience with the Fitbit Aria scale, Ann! If you’ve got an aging router then maybe it is a good opportunity to upgrade to get some faster speeds rolled out particularly if it has slower wireless capabilities built in.

Brand new Fitbit Aria scale and getting ERR message. Have tried everything above. Any other suggestions? Thanks for any help you might give.

    1. One other thing that you might try is replacing the batteries. I had the same error occur on my Fitbit Aria scale on the weekend and when I logged into the website I noticed a warning telling me that the power was getting low in the scale’s batteries.

After replacing the batteries it worked fine but it could have been a coincidence. I would think that the batteries included with the scale would be fully charged but it’s one more thing to rule out in any case.

  3. My replacement scale is on back order from Amazon. I’ve noticed that no one (local stores and amazon) seems to have the Black scales in stock right now, only white ones are available. I’m wondering if the black scales are really just all sold out or if there was a problem with them.

    1. Your guess is as good as mine on them but I would assume that apart from the external finish the black scales would be identical to the white scales.

Maybe people are just preferring the black scales over the white ones? If so, it would seem a little odd to me given that a lot of bathrooms (where a scale would normally go) tend to be white as well.

I bought the white scale last fall and it worked flawlessly for several months. I then had a completely unrelated potential security issue on my home network and part of my security response was erasing all the MAC addresses that were in my router’s MAC filter (I add each device to the router’s MAC filtering function, just as an added layer of security). I then physically went back to each device and verified its MAC address and added each one back to the MAC filter list. That was a few months ago. Today I finally got around to adding my scale’s MAC address into the MAC filter on my router and attempted to set up the wireless connectivity again. Same WIFI ERR message appeared that everyone is talking about. I rebooted my PC and that did not help. I then powered down my router for 10 seconds, then powered it back up, as well as moving it a little closer to the scale–that did the trick. I think the router power cycle was what fixed it. I am now connected. I think the person above who purchased a new router may have only had to do a power cycle on their old router to fix the problem.

    1. Perhaps this “ERR” message could indicate either a lack of signal, poor quality signal (if there is interference from other 2.4GHz networks/devices) or a stale router. Certainly can’t hurt for others to try what you’ve suggested.

I’ve had the same problem. Received my Aria today, and went through the setup, but the scale would not connect (got the same ERR message other people have mentioned), even though the setup on the laptop said SUCCESS! I’ve sent an email to Fitbit support and even tracked down a “support number,” though all you can do is leave a message. No response yet, but it’s only been an hour. I’m very frustrated and disappointed that no phone support is available. Dontcha hate gettting in back-and-forth emails for days where they just tell you to do the same thing that the website says, and which you’ve already tried, probably multiple times? If I don’t get an adequate response in a day, this scale is going back. Nice idea, poor execution, no customer support!

    1. Disappointing to hear – I would be interested to hear if Fitbit are able to resolve your problem or if you end up sending it back for a refund.

I have also had same issue. Try to connect through Iphone 5 and get the WIFI ERR issue. Emailed fitbit support and they asked me many questions. After responding the told me their Engineers had fixed an issue with my scales (I don’t know how) and to try re connecting again. I did this 4 times to no avail and have now taken screen shots of how I do the setup and a video of what the scales display during the process. As of now I am still awaiting a response. If no rectification is received I may upgrade router and see if that helps and if not they are going back!

    1. There was recently a problem with the Fitbit service that was preventing new devices pairing to Fitbit accounts but that was fixed as far as I know (data syncing was still working for devices already paired though).

What router are you using presently?

Same problem here. I keep getting the ERR message. I’m in Southern California so no chance it is an issue with temperature.

Brand new Aria scale. WiFi setup was completely successfully. I am able to see the device registered when I log into my account on the web, so that would indicate the scale had no problem connecting to my Apple WiFi base station.

Very disappointing. Apparently, many others having same issue. Unless this can be reliably solved, I’ll be returning this unit to Amazon within the next few days. Shame on Fitbit for not providing proper customer service.

The same thing is happening with me. Out of the box, I was able to connect it to my wifi with my computer, phone and tablet, but it got an error every single time I tried to weigh myself. It said wifi setup successful. But when I’d step on, it’d say step off, thinking, err. It has never given a number, only an err message. Please tell me what to do!

    1. This sounds like the environment could be too hot/cold or too humid for the scales or otherwise there could be a hardware failure in which case you should probably contact Fitbit for a warranty replacement.

    1. Some good feedback there regarding repowering the router – definitely can’t hurt to give that a go before looking at more drastic options such as sending back the scales!

I purchased an Aria which worked well for three weeks and then got the Err issue. I contacted Fitbit and they sent me another one. Got through the set up on the new unit and it immediately had the same issue after setup. This leads me to believe that the problem is some kind of networking issue. I checked the DHCP table on my router and found both scales listed on the router. I deleted the issued IP address (this should cause the scale to ask for another one) and it didn’t. I tried to weigh myself several more times but the scale does not ask for an IP and therefore doesn’t talk on the wifi network it is connected to.

I even tried taking out the battery to get it to ask for an IP again after booting. It hasn’t showed up in the DHCP table so it’s not asking. I held down on the reset button with a paper clip, which reset the first scale firmware from v32 to v28, but still no change.

I was having the problem with my Aria that I bought 3 months ago in April 2013 and I was having problems with the unit synching and it was working intermittently. Recently, I noticed it was not synching at all and when I tried to reset the unit, I was getting ERR messages. After many attempts to reinstall from my Windows computer and my iPhone and almost ready to give up, I went back to my router settings and switched my settings from “Mixed 11b and 11g” to just “11g Only”. After installing from my iPhone, it worked perfectly. I have an AT&T service with a 1 year old Netgear router. Not sure why it worked before but possibly the new updated App for the iPhone had some issues with wireless mode.

  4. I just received a replacement aria scale due to the above ERR message. I cant get the new scale to sync to my wifi. I have the below options chosen and no matter what, I cant get it to sync. What in the world is going on with the Netgear routers and the Aria? HELP ME!!

I have changed the mode to various options (54, 145, 300) and even changed the security to this option “WPA-PSK [TKIP] + WPA2-PSK [AES]”.

    Something has to work….

    Region Selection
    Region:

    Wireless Network (2.4GHz b/g/n)
    Enable Wireless Isolation
    Enable SSID Broadcast
    Name (SSID): Netgear 19
    Channel:
Mode: Up to 54Mbps, up to 145 Mbps and up to 300 Mbps

    Security Options
    None
    WEP
    WPA-PSK [TKIP]
    WPA2-PSK [AES] SELECTED
    WPA-PSK [TKIP] + WPA2-PSK [AES]

    1. Hi Holly, I would have to double check but you might need to change the channel in the Wi-Fi router to 1, 6 or 11. The Aria may not support channels beyond 11.

POS, worked one time. Got the same message as everyone else “err”, then reset “err”, then rest again “err” “err” “err”, total piece of garbage. Taking mine back to Best Buy, I was going to exchange, but after reading this thread I’m not spending my hard earned money on this obviously crappy product.

For those interested here is my story as well.

    1) Got the fitbit flex wristband with the aria scale. Wristband has been awesome and works great! Aria … not so much.

    – I managed to get the wifi setup no problem.
    – Stepped on the scale and got the ERR message over and over
    – Reset the scale a number of times with no luck
    – Email support told me to reset again.. tried a couple more times… and duh… no luck.
    – Took the scale back to Best Buy and got it exchanged with a new one.
    – Came home… deleted the old one from my account online and set the new one up on wifi.
    – Stepped on the scale to test it out…. ERR again…. and again … and again…

Don’t bother with the product. It really isn’t worth the hassle. I was so excited by it too… and even hoped that replacing it / exchanging it would solve the problem. I was wrong. It is just a flawed product that should not have been released yet.

I have ordered 2 scales from Amazon in the past month and BOTH of them only say ERR after thinking. I have reprogrammed them each about 10 times, reset via the pin hole with no help…. What a piece of CRAP!!! And the fact that FitBit does not have a phone number for tech support makes ME EVEN MADDER!!!!!

  5. Here are my notes on how to make the setup easier on the Mac: http://www.bentristem.com/1/post/2013/11/getting-fitbit-wi-fi-scale-setup-to-work-on-macos.html

    1. Great stuff, thanks for sharing!

Much like many of you I had an easy WiFi connection and set up, but now I have the same dreaded “Step On” and “Sensing” error. Only my Aria scale doesn’t give me an error, it just goes back and forth between the “Step On” and “Sensing” and it will do this for as long as you’re standing on the bloody thing. It has NEVER worked or given me my weight! The fact of the matter is that this scale is a pile of crap. I’m returning it and purchasing a Withings. Which is a nice scale, it just sucks that it doesn’t integrate with my Fitbit Force wristband and Fitbit app on my iPhone. Fitbit, you should be ashamed to sell this scale with such an incomprehensibly high failure rate. Either fix the damn thing, or stop selling it.

P.S. It’s not due to temperature, humidity, battery power, alignment of the stars, or what ever else others may say. This scale is as useless as a turd in a punchbowl.

I have been using an Aria for some time. Updated my wifi router and now the setup partially works but the ERR is the standard now. Send them the scale logs to the email their setup app links to… after a few days I get a thanks email worded as if they resolved the issue…. Not my first disappointment with Fitbit (not having any stock of replacement bands) but its still the best device for what it does right now.

No Sync error on new aria, shame to find this website after you encounter problems
i’ve set up a router on 11b just for this fitbit device taking everything i’ve read into consideration
even emailed the chap who got the patent for the wifi gizmo, since fitbit support on this issue is inadequate
    really really disappointed

    Hi there

Just to let you know I had this exact problem, I tried everything to no avail, I saw your blog via google search (the only one with a solution may i add) and it has worked a treat! Thank you! I just put my scales on the radiator for 15 mins and job done! Not exactly great when scales would normally be kept on a cold possibly tiled bathroom floor though! Still I do love them though, they’re great scales.

    1. I am still amazed by this design flaw but I am glad to hear that warming up your scale worked 🙂

I just got my scale. It would accept my info from the software. No err on my scale. Just would go through the setup, say it was linking my scale to my fitbit software and then it would say the setup didn’t complete and gave me the “try again” screen. It connected to the network on my ipad but never connected to my Fitbit account or showed up in my software. Because of that it weighs me as a guest and I can’t see my weight online. Any thoughts would be appreciated. I’m really frustrated.

  6. Hi
Worked fine for 3 weeks. I now get the sensing thinking err message. Tried everything. Contacting support now.
