Signup for eCensus 2011

Over the next few days, Australians across the country will come home to find a stack of Census material in their letterboxes or jammed under their doors (where hopefully your pet hasn’t lovingly gnawed on it). This Census, as was the case with the previous Census in 2006, “eCensus” is available as a submission method aside from the traditional paper forms we have come to love (or loathe).

So how do you sign up for eCensus?

You should have received an orange envelope similar to the one below:

What you need to do is tear off the perforated sides of the envelope and open it up. The inside should look something like this (I have blurred out my number for obvious reasons):

From here on in, it’s pretty easy (as per the form):

  • Go to www.census.gov.au in your web browser,
  • Click on Start eCENSUS,
  • Enter in your Census Form Number (found on the outside of the envelope) and eCensus Number (on the inside of the envelope) on the following screen:

  • Click the “Login” button,
  • You’ll get a screen processing your information like the one below:

  • You will then be asked about how many people for whom you will be filling in the Census according to the listed conditions below (you can adjust it when you actually fill it in next week):

  • Click “Next”,
  • On the next screen, fill out your address details:

  • Click “Next”,
  • Fill in the details of the householder or another suitable adult as “Person 1”,

  •  Click “Next”,

From here, you can exit your eCensus form by clicking on the “Exit (save) eCensus” link on the left hand side and leave the rest until August 9th.

Just make sure you click “Yes” to save your information. If you click “No” your changes will be discarded. Otherwise, you can pre-populate the rest of the form, save it and then come back to it on the night.

Anyway, eCensus is pretty straightforward and when I did it back in 2006 it went through without a hitch (fingers crossed for this year).
