Shorten Your Own URLs with Bit.ly

Another quick tip for tonight.

If you want to share links with friends or would like to shorten URLs for your own convenience you can use a service such as Bit.ly to help you out. If you sign up, you can not only create shorted URLs but also customise the shortened URL. For example, a bit.ly URL might look like http://bit.ly/c2SHMX+ which by most accounts would be hardly memorable. Through customisation, you can specify the shortened URL to be something like http://bit.ly/boydo which is much better especially when you are verbally communicating URLs. Otherwise, some mail clients don’t like some of those really long URLs that you get on websites that use a CMS.

Another neat part of the service is that you can keep track of the number of clicks you get on your shortened URLs as well as a range of other statistics. You can also view a list of all of the shortened URLs you have created over time.

Best of all, the service is free to use for personal use so there’s no harm in giving it a try and seeing how it works for you.
