Samsung Galaxy S – A Less Hacky Way to Restore the Three Button Modes

Another quick one for the folks with Samsung Galaxy S handsets.

A few days ago I wrote about how you could do a registry hack to update the firmware on your Samsung Galaxy S to a Canadian version that specifically fixes the missing download and recovery modes on affected devices.

Over on XDA Developers, some bright spark has come up with an update.zip method of correcting the problem which is far simpler (and safer) than registry hacking and then attempting to use Odin to then jump to another version of firmware. You will of course require the Android SDK to be installed which should be fairly straightforward plus the drivers for your handset (32-bit or 64-bit depending on your operating system).

If there is one thing I have come to appreciate, it’s the dedication of the developers and the willingness of the Android community to get their hands dirty and get into the guts of this stuff.  Meanwhile, Samsung Australia remains silent since their last update on 10/09/2010 and not much has been heard about an official Froyo release (Android 2.2) or official fixes for the lag (another one tackled by the Android community a few different ways) and GPS problems.
