{"id":860,"date":"2010-05-15T22:46:59","date_gmt":"2010-05-15T12:46:59","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/mingersoft.com\/blog\/?p=860"},"modified":"2010-11-12T21:05:55","modified_gmt":"2010-11-12T10:05:55","slug":"google-caught-short-on-wifi-network-privacy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mingersoft.com\/blog\/2010\/05\/google-caught-short-on-wifi-network-privacy\/","title":{"rendered":"Google Caught Short on Wi-Fi Network Privacy"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A couple of articles \u00a0have surfaced over the last few days concerning Google and its collection of WiFi network information when conducting its Street View activities. <a title=\"Google Street View 'mistakenly' collected Wi-Fi data | News.com.au\" href=\"http:\/\/www.news.com.au\/technology\/google-street-view-mistake-gathers-personal-wifi-data\/story-e6frfrnr-1225867068739\" target=\"_blank\">One such article detailing Google&#8217;s response and admission<\/a> of its actions has me scratching my head.<\/p>\n<p>Alan Eustace, a senior vice president at Google, was quoted as having said:<\/p>\n<p><em>&#8220;We want to delete this data as soon as possible, and are currently  reaching out to regulators in the relevant countries about how to  quickly dispose of it.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Are they serious? If I had a file on my computer and wanted to delete a bunch of stuff, I&#8217;d select it all and press the delete key. If I were concerned about the data, I&#8217;d overwrite the data many times with garbage. Of course, you can go to the extreme by using things like a degaussing device, smashing the media into a million pieces and then throwing it into some concrete mix.<\/p>\n<p>What happened to Google&#8217;s &#8220;don&#8217;t be evil&#8221; mantra? There&#8217;s been some notable carelessness lately, particularly with the <a title=\"Google Buzz - Privacy | Wikipedia\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Google_Buzz#Privacy\" target=\"_blank\">Google Buzz<\/a> service.
