I have been interested in this camera to try and strike a balance between gain the control and quality you’d expect in a digital SLR camera while cutting down on the size and weight of the camera body and lenses. Having a heavy camera hanging around your neck and a back full of stuff can become tiresome even for professionals and enthusiasts.

For the benefit of people who don’t know, I joined the Panasonic Insider Crew late last year and last year became Insider Guru. From time to time, I’ll get my hands on some Panasonic gadgets and I’ll also share my thoughts and experiences with you so you can make more informed decisions when you are making your next electronics purchase. Admittedly, I’m no camera professional but I’m not afraid to expand my horizons a bit in order to tap into the potential that this camera offers.

Anyway, I’ll go into more detail in the preview video but I’ll cover off some of the main features:

16 megapixel Micro Four Thirds sensor,

Full AVCHD 1080/60i video capture,

ISO 160 through ISO 12,800,

Electronic level gauge,

Strereo microphone,

Built-in flash (some MFT cameras don’t include one at all),

Touchscreen controls,

Support for powered-zoom lenses (ideal for capturing video in order to eliminate jerkiness in zooming).

The Lumix GX1 does not include OIS (that’s Optical Image Stabilisation) in the body but instead builds it into lenses that would benefit from the feature. People argue either way on the benefits of in-body OIS versis lens-based OIS but I reckon getting the stabilisation closer to the image is the way to go personally.

I received the DMC-GX1X kit in silver which includes a F3.5-5.6/14-42mm X Series powered lens with OIS and it weighs 420g with its battery, SD card and included lens installed.

To find out what’s in the box, check out the unboxing video below and, if you have any questions, make sure you leave a comment below!

FYI – the video will be available in up to 1080p (YouTube can take a little while to process the higher resolutions) if you right click on the video and choose “Watch on YouTube” and change the resolution setting.

Stay tuned!

Well, it finally arrived and I have to tell you that I am quite excited!
