I am out to watch the cricket at the Sydney Cricket Ground<\/a> today which got me thinking about how mobile access to the Internet has changed modern communication.<\/p>\n

I am writing this from my iPhone which I have also used to take a couple of photos to accompany this update. When I finished school just over a decade ago, I could have only dreamt that something like this could be possible.<\/p>\n

Earlier today, I had to get a file extract out to some stakeholders after I had left home to get to the SCG. After I had arrived, I whipped out my laptop and connected to the corporate network via VPN<\/a> over 3G and had the job done in about ten minutes. A decade ago, I probably would have had to go back to the office, battle traffic going both ways and miss out on what I would hope to be a good match (unfortunately, rain has interrupted play for a little while).<\/p>\n

Aside from work, it was great to keep tabs on the BOM<\/a> and see if the rain was going to halt the game.<\/p>\n

With increased flexibility does come the temptation to remain connected for extended periods of time. This can cause problems with the work\/life balance encouraged by many businesses as well as responsibilities outside of work.<\/p>\n

Personally, I like the idea of ubiquitous connectivity but also realise that I do have the option of pushing back outside of work hours, no matter how easy it might be to login.<\/p>\n
