The two main reasons I selected that camera was to test out its 3D photo capabilities and that is is also waterproof (which is great for when I go down the beach with the dogs and I won’t have to risk the life of my mobile phone by wading into the water).

Anyway, I was looking for something to perhaps replace our digital SLR, currently a Canon 350D. It’s a big camera and with a lens it can be somewhat bulky and heavy to have hanging from your neck for long periods of time. While it does take some great photos I wanted to find something a bit lighter which led me to look at a “Micro Four Thirds” camera.

In a nutshell, Micro Four Thirds was developed to help decrease the overall chassis size and thickness of cameras with an interchangeable lens while making considerations for both photo and video capture. It’s a smaller version of the Four Thirds system originally developed which focuses on compactness and portability but maintaining high image quality.

Anyway, this month Panasonic released the Lumix DMC-GX1 which fit the bill nicely so I decided to order a kit containing the camera and the power zoom lens. I thought I would restrain myself from going overboard with additional lenses initially until I identified a need for them. The power zoom lens will do the trick for most regular photography plus it will provide superior controlled zooming compared to a manual zoom lens when shooting videos (in Full HD).

Nonetheless, I have picked out a couple of other lenses… just in case.

Anyway, stay tuned as I think this could be a ripper of a camera and one that budding photographers might consider purchasing for their craft.

Another quick update for today.
