Here’s a quick tip for this evening.
It is fairly common these days for us to plug in our smartphones, tablets and portable music players into our car audio systems, home entertainment systems or other standalone speakers to enjoy some music or listen to podcasts. However, in order to ensure that you are preserving audio quality there is something fairly straightforward that you can do.
Quite simply, increase the volume on your output device (such as your smartphones, tablet, iPod, etc) to its maximum and the use the volume control on the receiving device to suit. What this does is provides the strongest signal from your portable device to your output device. This approach will help to reduce noise in the final output and preserve the audio as it was intended to be heard.
You shouldn’t be running the risk of overloading most speaker systems when hooked up to a portable device these days but if you find that the audio is clipping then you should dial back the volume on your portable device until that stops.
The other thing to consider is that if a particular recording was too soft in the first instance then this approach probably won’t help you too much and you’d find yourself cranking up the volume on your speaker system to compensate. You’ll probably detect noise as well (as you are now amplifying a weak signal that is competing with noise generated from electronics, environment, etc) which may impact your listening experience. The best solution in this instance is to obtain another recording that captures sufficient signal which does not require much in the way of amplification.
