A little while ago I gave you all the heads up that I was getting a new solid state drive for my desktop computer to replace the Patriot Warp 128GB SSD that is currently my bootable OS and application drive. It has been running a bit slow given that I run it close to capacity so I needed to find a solution.
As I mentioned in the previous blog, I was keen to find something that was a step above the rest in order to justify the purchase. SSDs have come a long way in the last few years with Sandforce based drives being amongst the better performers. Anyway, my research lead me to decide upon the OCZ RevoDrive 3 X2, a PCI Express solid state drive.
Yes, I said PCI Express – this is not a SATA SSD. This card plugs directly into the motherboard to get direct access to that bandwidth coursing down the PCI Express bus. It needs at least an x4 slot which might be a tough ask when you have two video cards already installed on some motherboards. Luckily, in my case, despite the x8 slot on my Gigabyte EX58-EXTREME motherboard being disabled when I have two video cards installed I had a spare x4 slot which worked out just fine (although I had to remove half of the heat pipe cooler to fit it in – no big deal).
Anyway, in the video below I’ll unbox the drive, give you a close look at it and run it through a benchmark to show you the insane speed of this drive. Of course, synthetic tests only show you so much so I’ll do another video showing you more practical stuff like a Windows boot, application loading and perhaps some gaming.
