Going for Broke – Manually Upgrading a Lumia 920 to GDR2 + Amber

That’s it, I can’t be bothered waiting anymore.

I like to think I am a pretty patient guy but I just don’t understand why Nokia Australia is releasing the country variant (i.e. unbranded) firmware for the Lumia 920 after the Telstra firmware has been released. Maybe Nokia is being extra cautious and conducting testing on carriers other than Telstra – if so then that’s fantastic but the deafening silence just puts customers offside.

Anyway, my data is all backed up anyway so I am going to go for broke and just update my phone manually using the Nokia Software Updater for Retail 3.0.8 available here. You just need to:

  1. Install it,
  2. Provide a name at the end of the install (I just typed in abcd),
  3. Plug in your Lumia,
  4. Fire up NSU for Retail and it should detect your phone and offer you an upgrade (I was offered version 3049.0000.1330.0006 for product code 059Q9P4 (unbranded black Lumia 920).

So, Nokia Australia – I ain’t waiting any longer.

The good news is that the flash went in without a hitch – so far enjoying GDR2 + Amber as well as Data Sense and the Nokia Pro Cam app (which you need to download manually).
