Kindle Pick – 10 Billion by Stephen Emmott

I am the absolute first to admit that I am not a bookworm. I am very picky about the books that I will read and usually they have some sort of a technology or mathematical angle to them. If the subject matter doesn’t really fit into my interests I can find it hard to stay interested in a book. As such, it can be a little while between books for me and my Amazon Kindle DX can get a little lonely.

Anyway, a good friend of mine brought a book to my attention a book that might be a little different although the guy who wrote it, Stephen Emoott, is the head of Computation Science at Microsoft Research. At the very least, the guy has something to do with technology and mathematics. The synopsis of the book is a bit bleak though:

‘I think we’re fucked’ Stephen Emmott

Ten Billion is a book about us.

It’s a book about you, your children, your parents, your friends. It’s about every one of us. It’s about our failure:

failure as individuals, the failure of business, and the failure of our politicians.

It is about an unprecedented planetary emergency.

It’s about the future of us.

That first line is rather blunt but it does grab your attention particularly when you see some of the supporting graphs which you can find over here.

I’m sure the subject matter will be quite polarising particular if climate change is brought into the equation so if you’re interested in reading this as well I would love to hear your thoughts.
