Network Drives on Raspbmc Inaccessible After March 2013 Update

Just a quick note for those of you running Raspbmc on your Raspberry Pi.

An update has been released which should bump the version up to XBMC 12.1 bring a slew of various improvements and bug fixes. As with any updates for Raspbmc all you need to do is reboot your Raspberry Pi and the update should download and install automatically.

Of particular note, there was a security fix included with this update which may enforce the use of a username and password when connecting to network shares on the Raspberry Pi from other computers. If you’ve not set these yourself then the default username should be pi and the default password should be raspberry.

However, if that does work then you should login via SSH and issue the following command:

sudo smbpasswd -a pi

You should then be prompted to enter a new password of your choice (perhaps choose something other than raspberry given that it is the default value).
